Course Objectives: | The course aims to provide a practical insight into the UN human rights systems, placing particular emphasis on the structure, functioning and procedures of these mechanisms. |
Course Content: | This course deals with the system of human rights protection and how the implementation and realization of human rights obligations are monitored in the United Nations (UN). Beginning with the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly in 1948 and drafting of the core human rights treaties, a complex set of institutions and instruments, including treaties and soft law texts were developed under the auspices of the UN in order to protect human rights. This course is designed to explore the legal and institutional framework for human rights protection through an examination of the UN treaty and charter-based monitoring mechanisms. The discussion topics will also include different cathegories of rights, the jurisprudence of the monitoring mechanisms, development of the scope of those rights through interpretation and current challenges. |
