Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course explores the architectural developments of Istanbul city within major different historical periods chronologically: the Prehistoric, the Colonial Byzantine, the capital of the Roman Empire with Constantinus, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire in the era of Iustinianos, the Medieval Constantinopolis, the Latin invasion with the Crusades, the Early, the Classical, and the Late Ottoman Period, the Westernization and the Republican Period.
Course Content: These courses provide a traditional perspective on the architectural heritage of Istanbul. The course covers the city's prehistoric periods, the Colonial period, the Byzantine, Roman and Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire periods, classical Constantinople, the Latin invasion, the early, classical and late Ottoman periods, and the architectural transformations up to the Westernization and Republic periods. Each period is analyzed in terms of architectural approaches, building typologies, development and cultural influences specific to that period, and the deep-rooted architectural structures of Istanbul are targeted.
