Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course focuses on Modern Chinese Literature after creating a profile on the Classical Period with an overview of Chinese Literary history. Students who successfully complete the course will have a different perspective on Chinese Literature by understanding the ideological characteristics of outstanding writers and their reflections on literature.
In this course, students are expected to have a general knowledge of the life and experiences of the authors, to know the general situation of the authors' literary identities, to know the representative works of the authors, and to understand the achievements and status of the author.
Course Content: This period consists of a total of 16 weeks. A course is divided into the midterm and one-course final exam, and 14 topics are covered in a total of 14 weeks. Starting from the classical period, general information about the history of Chinese literature is given. Modern Chinese literature is examined periodically and important writers and their works are analyzed. Detailed text analysis is done to develop students' artistic intuition.

2) lesson 1: The book of Poetry: Including a introduction of The Book of Poetry and its contents and artistic achievements. We will learn three poems:周南关雎,卫风木瓜,王风采葛 and ask students to recite 关雎. preview the text and works
3) lesson 2: Tao Yuanming: Understand Tao Yuanming's life, his thoughts, the characteristics and achievements of his poems. Study three of Tao’s poems: 归园田居 (the first), 归园田居 (the second) and 饮酒 (the fifth). Students are required to recite 饮酒 (the fifth). preview the text and works
4) lesson 3: Meng Haoran and Wang Wei: Get to know Wang Wei and Meng Haoran, the representative poets of High Tang. Understand their life, the characteristics and achievements of their poetry. Learn one poem of Meng Haoran: 过故人庄,and three poems of Wangwei:山居秋暝、鹿柴 and 送元二使安西. Ask the students to recite the last poem. preview the text and works
5) lesson 4: Frontier Poetry Group of High Tang: Understand the social reasons for the rising of the Frontier Poetry Group of High Tang. Get to know the representative poets of the frontier poetry group and their representative poems. Learning four frontier poems, they are: 别董大 (Gao Shi), 逢入京使(Cen Sen), 出塞 (Wang Changling) and 闺怨 (Wang Changling). Ask students to recite the first poem. preview the text and works
6) lesson 5: Li Bai: Understand Li Bai's life, his poetic features and artistic achievements, and his lofty position in the history of classical Chinese literature. Learn four of Li Bai's poems: 行路难、望庐山瀑布、望天门山和早发白帝城. Ask students to recite the last poem. preview the text and works

11) lesson 8: Sushi: Understand Sushi's position in the history of Chinese literature, his life experience, the characteristics and achievements of his literary creation. Learn two words of Sush, they are: 江城子(十年生死两茫茫)和水调歌头(明月几时有) preview the text and works
12) lesson 9: Li Qingzhao: Understand Li Qingzhao's life, the characteristics and achievements of her Ci(词) creation, and her contribution to the theory of Ci(词). Learning her four Ci, they are: 如梦令(常记溪亭日暮)、醉花阴(薄雾浓云愁永昼)、武陵春春晚(风住尘香花已尽)和声声慢(寻寻觅觅冷冷清清凄凄惨惨戚戚).
13) lesson 10: Lu You: Understand Lu You's life, the characteristics and achievements of Lu You's poetry creation. Learning three of his poems, they are: 秋夜将晓出篱门迎凉有感、十一月四日风雨大作、示儿, and his two Ci(词), respectively: 钗头凤和卜算子咏梅 preview the text and works
14) lesson 11: Xin Qiji:Understand Xin Qiji's life, the characteristics and achievements of his creation on Ci(词). Learning four of his Ci(词), they are:青玉案元夕、清平乐独宿博山王氏庵、菩萨蛮书江西造口壁 and 清平乐(茅檐低小) preview the text and works
