Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: Learn the features Chinese characters possess which distinguishing itself from other languages. It introduces the origin, structure, rules and cultural and social background of Chinese characters in a systematic approach. Analyses integrated with case studies are provided in great amount to achieve effective application. Visual materials are attached almost in each session to cooperate classroom learning. The content will cover the formation, evolution and methodology of Chinese characters as well as their linguistic, scientific and cultural background. Students taking this course will be able to improve their efficiency in reviewing characters already in command and in learning new characters they will come across.
Course Content: • To grasp the origin, structure and rules of Chinese character in formation, evolution, and culture
• To recognize 11 types of structure for Chinese character composition by form
• To recognize strokes that given Chinese characters use
• To use stroke rules correctly in writing Chinese characters
• To recognize specific method that given Chinese character being formed
• To specify 6 formation methods of Chinese characters and give supporting example characters
• To analyze Chinese character in perspective of form, meaning and formation methods
• To recognize 200 radicals of Chinese characters and give supporting example characters
• To recognize 9 words formation methods for Chinese characters
• To get access to natural, cultural and social background of Chinese characters
• To acquire systematic knowledge on learning new Chinese characters

1) • Discover the origin of Chinese characters • Revivificate the social and cultural soil Chinese characters come into being • Illustrate evolution of Chinese characters in form • Illustrate evolution of social reforms related to Chinese characters • Figure out the reasons that Chinese characters live for five thousand years Research and compare on the form of languages of the four ancient civilizations: Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Indian and Chinese civilizations.
