Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: Students will be taught the basic structure of the oud instrument, playing techniques and basic musical information.
To provide students with the ability to play oud at a beginner level.
Course Content: Review of oud techniques, repetition of basic makams.

Lesson Plan

1) Introduction to the oud, structure of the instrument, introduction to basic positions.
2) Learning basic oud techniques, introduction of basic maqams.
3) Studying the first oud pieces, rhythm exercises.
4) Practicing basic breathing control and ornamentation techniques.
5) Expansion of the repertoire, attempts at composing simple oud.
6) Oud performance techniques, melodic development.
7) Performance preparations, technical review.
8) Midterm Exam
9) Performance and evaluation, end-of-term evaluation.
10) Studying second level pieces, introducing new makams.
11) In-depth study of breath control and ornamentation techniques on the oud.
