Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: To provide an overview of certain periods in the history of chamber music, to understand the stylistic features specific to the periods by analyzing selected works; to gain skills in understanding chamber music forms and creating their own works; learning the role and interaction of different instruments and developing instrumentation skills; It includes making music within the group and developing performance skills. It also aims to encourage students to reach a broad musical understanding by offering them a perspective that includes elements of Turkish music.

Lesson Plan

1) Turkish Music interactions in the Ottoman period Lecture notes will be given to students weekly.
2) The role of Traditional Turkish Music in chamber music works. Lecture notes will be given to students weekly.
3) Modal music, teaching new scales and exemplifying with a work from the Renaissance period Lecture notes will be given to students weekly.
4) The use of Turkish makams in chamber music form and structure Lecture notes will be given to students weekly.
5) An attempt to write a 12-16 bar chamber music using Turkish makams or modes. Lecture notes will be given to students weekly.
6) Traditional chamber music instruments and orchestration information Lecture notes will be given to students weekly.
7) Midterm Exam
8) Providing at least two works written in the 19th century and later for students to play with accompaniment. Lecture notes will be given to students weekly.
