Course Objectives: | This course is the second in establishing the orientation of the student in geotechnical engineering. The student must be indoctrinated for viewing rock mechanics as one of his main professional activities, because he has not studied this course during undergraduate years. Emphasis is placed on laboratory work and problem sessions to make up for the deficiency. |
Course Content: | Introduction to rock mechanics Influence of geology on civil engineering rock mechanics Basic properties of fresh rock: unit weight, porosity, slaking Basic properties of fresh rock: strength measurements Mechanics of sound rock : Laws of Stress and strain Mechanics of sound rock : Griffith, Griffith Brace,Hoek-Brown;Classification Natural and induced stresses in rock masses Measurement and description of discontinuities; mechanics of discontinuity Analysis of rock mass with discontinuity systems; mass classification systems Bearing capacity of superficial footings Analysis of piles in rock Introduction to underground structures Tunnel mechanics Concept of temporary support systems |
