Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to enhance students' technical mastery of percussion instruments, improve their musical expression, and provide them with stage experience, contributing to the development of a professional artist identity. Additionally, students will engage in in-depth studies of contemporary music approaches and extended techniques, fostering creative improvisation and performance skills. The course aims to equip students with the competence to lead solo performances, chamber music, and orchestral works.
Course Content: 1. Technical Studies

Fundamental and advanced technical exercises for various percussion instruments (drums, cymbals, marimba, vibraphone, timpani, etc.)
Developing independence and rhythmic precision through playing with both hands
Different striking techniques (soft and hard strokes, dynamic control in the background, speed, etc.)
Techniques for working with metal instruments such as cymbals and bells
Striking points and sound control
2. Repertoire Studies

Percussion works from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods
Solo percussion repertoire (marimba, vibraphone, drum solo pieces, etc.)
Chamber music studies (especially interaction with other instruments)
Orchestral percussion repertoire (percussion passages and solo sections for symphonic orchestra)
Works including contemporary music and extended techniques
3. Musical Interpretation and Expression

Stylistic analysis and interpretation of percussion works
Developing musical expression, dynamic diversity, and temporal flexibility
Exploring tone color and range on percussion instruments
Use of percussion instruments in musical expression
4. Performance Techniques and Stage Experience

Working on stage presence, body language, and performance psychology
Concert preparation, rehearsal processes, and stage management
Solo performances and group performances (concerts, masterclasses)
Developing group cohesion and leadership skills
5. Improvisation and Contemporary Techniques

Creative improvisation techniques and improvising on percussion instruments
Contemporary compositions and experimental techniques (use of time and space, sound design, extended techniques)

Lesson Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Week 1: Introduction and Technical Fundamentals Introduction to the course, expectations, and goals. Introduction to percussion instruments (drum, cymbals, marimba, vibraphone, timpani, etc.). Basic technical exercises: Rhythmic exercises and independence training. Techniques for cymbals and drums.
2) Week 2: Marimba Techniques and Studies Basic technical exercises on marimba: Hand independence, speed, and dynamic control. Introduction to marimba repertoire: Baroque and Classical period works. Proper playing positions and tone production on the marimba.
3) Week 3: Vibraphone Techniques and Repertoire Basic technical exercises on vibraphone: Dynamic variety, speed, and tone. Introduction to vibraphone repertoire: Romantic period works. Techniques for performance posture and playing position.
4) Week 4: Drum Techniques and Repertoire Speed and dynamic control on drums: Basic rhythmic exercises. Solo drum repertoire practice. Orchestra drum passages and solo sections: Working with orchestral repertoire.
5) Week 5: Cymbals and Metal Instruments Techniques Techniques for working with cymbals and metal percussion instruments. Different striking techniques: Soft and hard strokes. Managing dynamic control and resonance with metal instruments.
6) Week 6: Chamber Music and Group Studies Chamber music practice with percussion and other instruments. Developing group harmony and collaboration skills. Introduction to chamber music repertoire: Percussion and strings.
7) Week 7: Percussion and Orchestral Repertoire Percussion passages and solo sections in symphonic orchestra works. Understanding the role of percussion in orchestra and collaborative work. Orchestra rehearsals: Working with the group and preparing for performance.
8) Week 8: Musical Expression and Dynamic Variety Musical expression exercises: Emotional aspects of percussion. Working on dynamic variety and tempo flexibility. Exploring tone color and tonal variation on percussion instruments.
9) Week 9: Improvisation Techniques Introduction to creative improvisation techniques. Improvisation on percussion instruments. Examples of improvisation in contemporary compositions.
10) Week 10: Contemporary and Extended Techniques Working with contemporary music and extended techniques. Experimental techniques on percussion instruments: Extended playing techniques, sound design. Working with contemporary compositions.
11) Week 11: Integration with Electronic Music Percussion technologies and integration with electronic music. Working with digital tools: Ableton Live and other software. Application of percussion in electronic music projects.
12) Week 12: Performance Preparation and Rehearsal Process Individual performances: Preparation processes and rehearsal techniques. Performance psychology: Stage fright and posture training. Final preparation for performance and stage management.
13) Week 13: Guest Artists and Masterclass Working with guest artists: Performance feedback. Masterclass: Students perform and receive feedback for development. Professional insights on percussion techniques and repertoire.
14) Week 14: Final Performances and Evaluation Students showcase their final performances. Performance feedback and technical development evaluation. Overall course evaluation and student feedback.
