Course Objectives: | The first part includes the major principles of physical geology covering the structure of the Earth, plate tectonics, volcanism and other mountain building processes, the surface erosion process, and the formation and properties of minerals and rocks. The second part concerns with the application of geological knowledge to civil engineering problems such as landslide, subsidence and earthquake etc. The third part includes the engineering classification of soils. The geology of dam construction. The importance of geology in tunnel construction. |
Course Content: | Definition of geology, engineering geology and importance in civil engineering, to develop an understanding of the Earth as a dynamic system, founded on knowledge of the composition and evolution of the Earth, including its subsystems: the crust, lithosphere, asthenosphere and core, geological cycle and plate tectonics, composition of earth crust: crystals, minerals and rocks, structural geology, stratigraphy and historical geology, rock and soil classifications based on their engineering geology properties; geology and engineering geology maps, mass movements (landslides, rockslides, rockfall, debris flow, etc.), slope stability, tunnel geology, dam geology, foundation geology, highway and motorway geology and environmental geology and urban geology. |
