Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to teach the interns health care system and organization in Turkey, how evaluate the
health status and identfy the health problems of the community, how to design and implement plans for controling
these problems, how to promote the health status of the community and the general principles of preventive,
curative and rehabilitative health services. The students will be introduced to the principles and methods of
epidemiologic investigation, including describing the patterns of health and illness in populations, quantitative
measures to determine risk, association and procedures for standardization of rates, application of basic principles
and methods in the design and conduct of epidemiologic studies. Prerequisites: MED501, MED502, MED503,

Course Content: Define health care system and organization in Turkey generally
 Define techniques for evaluation of the health status and identification of the health problems of the
community,
 Design and implement plans for controling these problems, how to promote the health status of the
community and the general principles of preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services.
 Define quarantine status and governing a local epidemy
 Define immunization programs in the community setting
 Define water purification and prevention of waterborne disease in the community settings
 Apply the basic terminology and definitions of epidemiology.
 Describe a public health problem in terms of magnitude, person, time and place.
 Calculate basic epidemiology measures
 Identify key sources of data for epidemiologic purposes.
 Explain the importance of epidemiology for informing scientific, ethical, economic and political
discussion of health issues.
 Draw appropriate inferences from epidemiologic data.
 Identify the principles and limitations of public health screening programs.
Comprehend basic ethical and legal principles pertaining to the collection, maintenance, use and
dissemination of epidemiologic data.
