Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course is designed to prepare students to define and discuss organizational behavior; diversity and cultural values; ethics; personality and attitudes; attitudes and job satisfaction; emotions and moods; perception and individual decision-making; motivation concepts; motivation; from concepts to applications; foundations of group behavior; understanding work teams; communication; leadership; power and politics; conflict and negotiation; foundations of organization structure; organizational culture; human resource policies and practices; organizational change and stress management.

Course Content: • Explain managerial needs related to organizational change, diversity and globalization.
• Define and discuss basic concepts that affect employee satisfaction and performance such as personality, emotions, attitudes, team building techniques, job satisfaction, motivation methods, and learning.
• Analyze group management, human behavior, leadership, communication and motivational activities within the organization.
• Grasp the "human" factor in businesses and to analyze the impact of internal and external environmental factors of the enterprise on the behavior of managers and all employees in the enterprise.

Lesson Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) • Discuss Course Syllabus and Outline • Describe the framework of the Term Project, i.e. Main topic, team formation, key deadlines, report writing, presentation due, etc. • Describe the main introductory terms and concepts related to organizational behavior • Introduce the importance of studying organizational behavior Review the Syllabus
2) • Discuss how your attitude is towards different groups of people like elderly. • Estimate forms of discrimination and provide examples for them in organizations. • Identify which biographical characteristics can be subject to discrimination by people. • Identify how one, as a manager shall make everyone in the organization aware of and be sensitive to the needs and differences of others for the sake of diversity management. 3) • Explain the concept of attitudes and job satisfaction • Discuss what factors lead to an increase in job satisfaction • Discuss if behavior always follow from attitudes or not and why • Compare and contrast the major job attitudes i.e. job satisfaction, job involvement and organizational commitment • Identify how satisfied people are in their jobs according to the studies • Evaluate the impact of satisfied and dissatisfied employees on the workplace Homework: Robbins & Judge (2015). Chapter 3: Case Incident 1 “The Pursuit of Happiness: Flexibility. Answer the questions.
4) • Identify and differentiate between emotions and moods • Identify and list the basic emotions and moods • Discuss the influence of emotions on our rationality • List the sources of emotions and moods • Discuss what Affective Events Theory stand for • Define emotional intelligence and discuss whether managers should use emotional intelligence tests Submit project topic and research methodology (next week due)
5) • Discuss why some people are quiet and passive, while others are loud and aggressive • Identify the factors that contribute to the development of personality, heredity, and/or environment • Apply the Myers Briggs Type Indicator personality framework • Apply the Big Five Personality Framework • Recognize the influence of situational factors on personality such as situational strength • Discuss how values change from one generation to another, from one culture to another and what external influences can bear the change in values Homework: Robbins & Judge (2015). Chapter 5: On the Costs of Being Nice, pg.179. Read the case and answer the questions to be discussed in the next class session.
6) • Discuss whether people’s role perceptions are becoming less traditional over time and why • Discuss whether you are intentionally or unintentionally making shortcuts in judging others and what sorts of shortcuts are these i.e. selective perception, halo effect, contrast effect, stereotyping, etc. • Identify how you can make a link between perception and individual decision-making • Discuss how individual differences and organizational constraints have influences on decision making Review the course content Continue working on final project
7) • Discuss if and how the motivation theories can be applied real organizational settings • Discuss how organizational justice is a refinement of equity theory • State management implications of employee engagement Study for the Midterm Exam Continue working on final project

11) • Discuss the differences between a leader and manager. • Identify which leadership characteristics are crucial for becoming an effective leader. • Discuss the use of mentoring in guiding our own career and personal lives. • Define authentic leadership. Continue working on final project
