Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to teach students the methods of arranging musical material for various instrument ensembles and symphonic orchestra, accompanied by theoretical knowledge.
Course Content: Beginner-level arrangements for small instrumental groups
Analysis of instrumentation examples from different musical periods and gaining historical perspective
Basic information about different instrument types and instrument groups
Acquisition of critical thinking skills on instrumentation techniques that affect musical expression

Lesson Plan

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) Instrument knowledge and sound characteristics - Basic information about various instrument types and instrument groups Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
2) Orchestration and arrangement techniques - The role and interaction of instrument groups in orchestral pieces. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
3) Instrumentation forms and musical expression - Rules and methods of instrumentation of symphonic forms. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
4) Instrumentation in historical perspective - Examples of instrumentation in different musical periods. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
5) Instrumental ensembles and chamber music arrangements - For chamber music arrangements and instrumental ensembles, instrumentation rules. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
6) Practical applications and project work - Students create their own instrumentation arrangements, they will carry out projects by analyzing selected musical works. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
7) Midterm Exam - Overall evaluation of the course and discussions on future applications
8) Performance analysis - Performances and analysis of edits made in the previous week. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
9) Instrumentation by periods - Basic instrumentation examples in the classical period. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
10) Instrumentation by musical periods - Basic examples of instrumentation in the Baroque period. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
11) Instrumentation by periods - Examples of basic instrumentation in the Romantic period. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
12) Preparation for a student project – A basic level work review or review in a style chosen by the students. Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
13) Work on the project – Pre-final feedback and review of instrumentation information Lecture notes will be provided to the student during class time.
14) Final Presentation – Delivery and evaluation of the project
