Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The immune system plays a vital role in protecting our body against infections and cancer. As a host defense system, it must be able to distinguish between external pathogens and its own tissues. This course examines the basic principles of immunology and the tissues and cells involved in the immune system.
Course Content: Basic concepts of immunology. Antigen-antibody definition and properties. the place and importance of immunohistochemistry in the pathology laboratory. Immuno staining procedure. Manual and device immunostaining methods.

5) • What is an antibody, its structure is explained • Structures and properties of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies.
6) • Giving general information about immunohistochemistry. • Explain the stages of immunohistochemistry.
7) What is antigen masking • Explaining how to unmask antigen.
8) • Evaluates students with midterm exam.
9) • What is a blockade, what are its sources, how to remove it • Enzymes and chromogens in IHC
10) • Teaching the detection methods of antigen in IHC staining • Explaining direct, indirect method, soluble enzyme-antienzyme complex, Avidin-Biotin methods
11) • Explaining what is counter staining in IHC staining and why it is done • Transparency and closure
