Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: • To understand and assimilate the basic skills, manners and ethics of an interpreter in action.
• To learn how to analyze speech of a certain calibre, including the analysis of the speaker’s reasoning.
• To develop the skill of simultaneous interpretation from English into Turkish.
Course Content: This course is designed to introduce students to the practice of simultaneous interpreting. The students are trained to become candidates for conference interpretation in a full-year programme for senior-year students of Translation Studies. The students are admitted to the course on the basis of a screening test and an oral interview. From each class, usually only three or four students with advanced linguistic skills and some cultural background qualify.
The course is mostly practical in nature. It teaches the skills of listening to a speaker in an intelligent manner and translating the speaker’s discourse into the target language simultaneously, through the use of a booth equipped with the appropriate technology. The classes are based predominantly on practicing the art of simultaneous interpretation. The student is also taught the manners and ethics required in conference interpretation. Last but not least, the course aims to raise the student’s interest, awareness and knowledge in those areas in which conferences are most usually organised, such as economics, international affairs, culture and the arts, the social sciences, ecology etc.
