Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: Evaluate the chemical reactions occurring in living organisms and in laboratory and the properties of organic reactions.
Course Content: This course contains;
1. Introduction to organic chemistry, C-C bonding
2. C-heteroatom bonding and properties
3. Alkanes and radicalic reactions
4. Alkenes
5. Elimination and addition reactions
6. Alkines and cycloalkanes
7. Aromatic structure and aromatic substitution reactions
8. Stereochemistry
9. Alkyl halogenures and nucleophylic substiyution reactions
10. Acid-base properties, alkohols and phenols
11. Carbonyl compounds, aldehydes and ketones
12. Nucleophylic addition to carbonyl groups
13. α-Addition to carbonyl groups
14. Carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines and their reactions
15. Amino acids and proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids : DNA and RNA .

1) 1. will be able to define the structure and functions of macromolecules (carbohydrate, protein, lipid, nucleic acid), vitamins and minerals.
2) 1.1. Recognize the general properties of monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides.
3) 1.2. Summarizes the structure and general characteristics of lipids and fatty acids, lipoproteins, sphingolipids, steroids.
4) 1.3. Describes the amino acids and their properties, the structure of proteins and the classification of proteins.
5) 1.4. Describe the structure of hormones and the mechanism of action of hormones.
6) 1.5. Summarizes the general properties of minerals and minerals.
7) 2. Explain the structural and functional importance of macromolecules in human body and discuss their relations with diseases.
8) 2.1. Explains diseases caused by enzyme deficiencies in metabolic pathways.
9) 2.2. Explains enzyme deficiencies in urea synthesis.
10) 2.3. Describe the lipid and glycogen storage diseases.
11) 2.4. Explains metabolic disorders of glucose and metabolic disorders associated with glucose metabolism disorders and atherosclerosis.
12) 3. will be able to discuss the anabolic and catabolic pathways for obtaining energy from macromolecules and the control steps in these pathways.
13) 3.1. Explains bioenergy, glycogen production and degradation, glycolysis, glycooneogenesis, citric acid cycle, pentose phosphate pathway, oxidative phosphorylation.
14) 3.2. Oxidation of fatty acids, ketogenesis lipogenesis, such as fat metabolism related issues.
15) 3.3. Understands the intersection points between all metabolic pathways and discusses energy metabolism.
16) 3.4. Explains the metabolic control mechanisms of macromolecules and the effects of enzymes and hormones in these control steps. Understands signal transmission systems.
17) 3.5. Establishes the relationship between energy metabolism and nutrition.
