Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: To give knowledge and consciousness on conservation of cultural heritage to the architect candidates
Course Content: Conservation of historical monuments, architectural and cultural heritage in our country and their conservation problems Description of the national and international notions, decisions, charters and laws concerning cultural heritage -especially architectural heritage- conservation Deterioration causes of the architectural heritage elements, conservation and restoration methods and technics, principles of the new construction in traditional tissu.
It’s explained historical evaluation and theoretical basis of conservation concept, conservation criterias, classification of architectural values, deterioration causes of buildings and historical environment. It’s informed about conservation concepts in site and urban scale, single building and building groups, site work and preparation stage of restoration projects with conservation and restoration examples in Turkey and the world.

Lesson Plan

1) Introduction of the course, explanation for homework. Definition, aim and practice of conservation and restoration.
2) Cultural heritage and its significances, Theoretical approach to conservation
3) Historical sites, its features, causes of demolishment, methods for conservation.
4) Conservation and restoration criterias: historical document value, time criteria.
5) Conservation and restoration criterias: economic and functional value, refunctioning of a historical building. Selection of the studio work in restoration
6) Conservation and restoration criterias: emotional, cultural, aesthetic values.
7) I. midterm exam
8) The evaluation of conservation idea, international working principles and charters.Discussion on selected building
9) Laws of conservation in our country, institution and foundations working on conservation and restoration, working principles.Discussion on selected building
10) Classification of architectural heritage. Discussion on selected building
11) Causes of decay and deteriorations and preparation of restoration project (measured drawings, restitution, restoration projects). Discussion on selected building
