Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: In this course, historical landscapes, which are one of the important subcategory of landscape architecture discipline, are analysed in point of gardens in Eastern and Western cultures during history. In this context, historical gardens and their related architectural buildings are examined according to their construction time period. In addition, gardens’ changing process and existing situation in our time is put forward for different cultures. Also, "cultural landscapes" in human-nature relationship are studied with regarding conservation of cultural heritages in terms of historical landscapes with developing future projections for their sustainability.
Course Content: In this course, historical landscapes, which are one of the important subcategory of landscape architecture discipline, are analysed in point of gardens in Eastern and Western cultures during history. In this context, historical gardens and their related architectural buildings are examined according to their construction time period. In addition, gardens’ changing process and existing situation in our time is put forward for different cultures. Also, "cultural landscapes" in human-nature relationship are studied with regarding conservation of cultural heritages in terms of historical landscapes with developing future projections for their sustainability. Students are expected to gain ability of making interpretation between different cultures and their lifestyle in the context of garden life and its architectural components (historical building in garden and garden elements). With this aim, course process is supported with site trips to historical gardens and student presentations prepared about different garden typologies.
