Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course aims to introduce the basic principles and basic quantitative methods of sociological research. For this purpose, the first part of the course will focus on the process of doing and writing social research in general. In the second part, quantitative research methods will be introduced. In the third part, the analysis of the data collected by quantitative research methods will be discussed. The aim of this course is to provide the infrastructure for 'Qualitative Research in Sociology ’course.
Course Content: Throughout the semester, an interactive training method will be followed and the lessons will be taught in the first three hours of lectures and the last hour will be practically practiced.

1) Introduction and Social Science: In this first lesson, it will be examined with which insights the sociological researches are applied throughout history and a comparison of these understandings will be made. 2) Basic Principles of Social Research: What is theory? What is hypothesis? What is a variable? What's the assumption? What are the differences of social sciences, especially sociology research, from research in other disciplines?In this course, the basic terms to be known in sociological research will be discussed. 3) Stages of Sociological Research: How to determine the subject of research? How to prepare research questions? How is the most appropriate method for research? How is the research design prepared? 4) Scan : The literature review is a very important part of the process prior to the beginning of sociological research. Why is literature review important? 5) Characteristics of Quantitative Research: This course will introduce quantitative research. What types of research are used for quantitative research? What kind of questions answers? 6) Primary and Secondary Data: What is primary data and secondary data? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? What kind of data is used for research? What are the varieties? 7) Sampling: Before starting to collect data, the selection of the people and / or groups to which the data will be collected is very important to collect the relevant and necessary data. 8) Methods of collecting data in quantitative research - Surveys: This course will examine the discussions about the most important quantitative research data collection methods. 9) Methods of Data Collection in Quantitative Research - Structured Observation / Structured Interview: In this course, structured observations and structured interviews, which are another data collection method in quantitative research, will be discussed. What is the difference between observations and interviews in quantitative research from observations and interviews in qualitative research? Which research is ideal? 11) Data Analysis - Hypothesis Testing: What are the stages of hypothesis testing? What are parametric and nonparametric tests and in what situations? After the quantitative data are collected, hypothesis testing is of great importance for the analysis. This course will discuss the hypothesis tests. 12) Data Analysis - Correlation Analysis: What is correlation and why is it important in quantitative data? Which correlation analysis is used? What is regression? Which regression analysis is used? 13) Research Presentation: Their analysis after analyzing the data constitutes a very important part of sociological research.
