Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course introduces key theoretical perspectives and empirical findings used to explain the relationships between management and organization theories and the environment, organizational goals, structures, designs, and performance.
Course Content: This course covers the definitions, elements and importance of organizations; historical development of organization-management theories; organizations as rational, natural and open systems; different perspectives and levels of analysis; "Organizational Ecology" and "Organizational Population" theories; organizational change; decision-making theories; power and policy practices in organizations; effects of technology on organizational structure; purposes, power, authority, control and conflict; “organizational anarchy” and “Adhocracy”; Firm Theory; organization-environment relations, “contingency” theory; inter-organizational institutional relations and “Networks” theory; historical development and institutionalization of the holding company structure; new organizational structures; historical development in organization-management theories; and chaos theory and the effects of post-modernism on these theories.
