Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course is designed to acquaint students with the elements of music and the primary musical styles of jazz music. Students will have a brief overview of the major musicians and their music through class lectures, listening to musical examples in class and actively engaging in class discussions.
Course Content: • Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of music and how these elements relate to the compositions presented in class
• Identify the critical importance of analyzing the styles of jazz music
• Recognize and identify significant musicians from the perspective of their artistic concerns, styles, and principal influences
• Identify and discuss the cultural norms of each of the styles of jazz music
• Discuss how the styles of jazz Music vary, how jazz influence to the art in general
