Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: This course focuses on a short history, basic assumptions, basic questions and problems of linguistics; modern approaches towards linguistics; language as a system; basic properties of human language; components of linguistics (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics).
Course Content: • Explain the short history of Linguistics as a science.
• Define the basic assumptions of linguistics.
• Explain the basic approaches, questions and problems of linguistics.
• Describe “language”.
• Explain the basic properties of human language.
• Identify the place of language as a system among the sign systems.
• Define the components of language.
• Define speech sounds.

1) • Introduce the course to the students • Getting to know T & Ss. Discuss syllabus & biblio. Introduce the course. What is linguistics?
2) • Describe what language is. • Define the basic assumptions about language.The Origins of Language. • What is language? Sources from Phrygian to Babillon-The Divine and Natural Sources.
3) • Explain the short history of Linguistics as a science. The Origins of Language. • A history of linguistic studies: Social Interaction and The Physical Adaptation (teeth, lips, mouth, larynx and pharynx) Sources. Tool-making and Genetic Sources.
4) • Drawing the attention towards animals and human language. • Comprehend the discipline of linguistics.Animals and Human Language. • Animals and Human Language • Identify the place of human language as a system above the animal talk. Communication, properties of human language, talking to animals, using language.
5) • Define speech sounds.The Sounds of Language. • Phonetics (1). Voiced and voiceless sounds, place of articulation, charting consonant sounds, manner of articulation, vowels.
6) • Define speech sounds./ The Sound Patterns of Language • Phonetics (1). Phonology, phonemes, phones and allophones, minimalm pairs and sets, phonotactics, syllables, coarticulation effects. Lecture/Guided Practice/ Study questions
7) • Introduce word formation to the students. • Defining word formation types • Word Formation: Etymology, Coinage, Borrowing, Compounding, Blending, Clipping, Backformation,Conversion, Acronyms, Derivation (prefixes, infixes and suffixes)

9) • Describe Morphology • Morphology, morphemes,free and bound morphemes, lexical and functional morphemes, derivational and inflectional morphemes, morphs and allomorphs
10) • Introduce grammar to the students • Grammar: traditional grammar, traditional analysis, the prescriiptive approach, the descriptive approach, structural analysis, constituent analysis, labeled and bracketed sentences
11) • Introduce syntax to the students • Describe syntactical features of langıage • Syntax : deep and surface structure, structural ambiguity, recursion, tree diagrams, symbols used in syntactic analysis, phrase structure rules, movement rules, back to recursion
12) • Describe semantics • Semantics: meaning, semantic rules (agent and theme, instrument and experiencer, location, source and goal), lexical relations (synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, prototypes, homophones and homonyms, polysemy, word play, metonymy), collocation.
13) • Introduce Pragmatics to the students • Pragmatics: context, Deixis, Reference, (inference, anaphora, presupposition), speech acts (direct and indirect speech acts), politeness (negative and positive face)
14) • Reviewing the last five units • Morphology, Grammar, Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics
