Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the elements of music and the primary musical periods of Western classical music. Students will have a brief overview of the major composers and their music through class lectures, listening to musical examples in class and actively engaging in class discussions.

Course Content: • Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of music and how these elements relate to the compositions presented in class
• Identify the critical importance of analyzing the periods of Classical Music
• Recognize and identify significant musicians from the perspective of their artistic concerns, styles, and principal influences
• Identify and discuss the cultural norms of each of the styles of Classical Music
• Discuss how the styles of Classical Music vary, how Classical Music influences to the art in general
