Course Objective and Content

Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to
• Name and define the terms and fundamental concepts of literature.
• Identify the concepts in literary texts and define them by using the terms.
• Distinguish the different language usage in different contexts by the help of reflection of everyday language in literary texts.
• Interpret and illustrate the basic concepts.
• Analyze the concepts, compare them with the ones in everyday language and debate on them.
• Transfer and use the new language structures and vocabulary in everyday language.
• Estimate the things about the fore-grounded events in literary texts by analyzing and reassembling the concepts; thus, reconstruct thoughts about everyday life.
• Evaluate literary works by filtering, appraise and judge them.
Course Content: In this course, students will read stories and watch films that are considered exceptional for the English language. Texts will come from all around the English speaking world, including America, Trinidad, Nigeria, etc. Students will learn to evaluate the texts and films in a critical way.

1) • Introduce the course to the class • What is literature? Why do we need it? What is the relation between literature and language teaching? Discussion Homework: assigned reading for next class session
2) • Discuss the ways in which a story functions. • Plot; conflict: internal/external (elements of prose fiction) Chapter 1 – Box 4-1 Critical thinking and discussion.
3) • Talk about what makes a story interesting, the form of a story, etc • Crisis, climax, resolution (elements of prose fiction) Discussion
